Covers

Factors Determining Leather or Fabric Quality

Several factors, alone and in combination, determine the quality in the cover material you purchase.

Durability

This is related to several principal factors:

  1. Strength of the material in terms of the ability to avoid tearing or separation of the seams.
  2. Stretching – some fabrics will tend to stretch over time and eventually look like the material is too large. All material will do this to some degree.
  3. Surface strength – this is tested by a rub test that determines how much friction the surface can take before it loses its surface characteristics and/or finish.

Color Fastness

Many materials will fade over time, especially if exposed to natural light. When two or more material are used, such as the case with a “leather-match” product, the two materials may respond differently to light or age over time.
